Will you Survive the Brutal Job Market in the Age of AI?
Someone asked me, âWhat is automation?â
I explained it.
Her response made me smile.
âOh, I hope people are NOT using this. It will take a lot of jobs.â
She is almost 80.
She is not into tech.
Yet she articulated, in one sentence, what many corporations spend entire conferences dancing around.
AI will take a lot of jobs.
AI combined with automation will take even more.
That is the brutal truth.
But it is not the entire truth.
Because AI will also create opportunities that go far beyond traditional employment.
The easiest way to understand what is coming is through three time horizons.
The next 1 to 2 years
Confusion.
Companies will fire people.
A lot.
Maybe it's already happening in your organisation.
Then
Hire AI teams.
Launch pilots.
Cancel pilots.
Then hire some of the people they fired.
A lot of organisations want to appear âAI-firstâ because it sounds innovative, impresses investors and makes executives feel like they are ahead of the curve.
But many still do not understand two basic things:
How to implement AI properly.
How much it will actually cost.
That is where we are right now.
Experimentation dressed up as "AI Strategy".
The next 3 to 5 years
This is where things get uncomfortable.
We will likely see massive workforce cuts.
Not because AI is simply another software tool.
AI learns.
AI improves.
AI scales.
AI can increasingly produce the work, review the work and coordinate other systems doing the work.
By this stage, more companies will understand where AI creates value, how to implement it and which roles they no longer need.
A lot of people will lose jobs.
Entirely.
Not temporarily.
The global battle will increasingly centre around the foundations that make AI possible:
Power.
Compute.
Infrastructure.
Without those three things, there are no magical AI apps.
Just expensive ideas sitting on a presentation slide.
Personally, I am very interested in financial instruments connected to this infrastructure. (Note: This is NOT financial advice. Do your own research!)
The software gets the attention.
The infrastructure gets paid.
Six years and beyond
The honest answer?
Nobody knows.
Anyone speaking with absolute certainty is either selling something or deeply confused.
By then, we may be dealing with systems approaching Artificial Superintelligence.
At that point, may the force be with us.
I do not expect some dramatic Hollywood apocalypse.
But I do expect businesses to operate at something close to the speed of thought. I mean this literally.
Like Alterego.io
Ideas conceived, tested, marketed and monetised in hours rather than months.
This will create enormous wealth.
It will also widen the gap between countries, companies and individuals.
Those with access to capital, compute, data and AI capability could receive exponential rewards.
Those who fail to adapt may find themselves competing in an economy that has moved on without them.
There is one interesting upside.
Human-made things may become premium.
When AI-generated content, products and services become everywhere, genuine human thought, craftsmanship, personality and imperfection will become more valuable.
When supply becomes infinite, sameness becomes worthless.
The human touch becomes the differentiator.
So what should you do?
1. Learn the language
Learn AI.
Learn automation.
Learn how technology changes workflows and business models.
You do not need to become a software engineer.
But you cannot afford to remain technologically illiterate.
My AI Workflow Accelerator teaches the fundamentals for $47, and you can begin applying the concepts immediately.
It's affordable. Get it now.
2. Make your value visible
Doing good work quietly is no longer enough.
Document the results you create.
Show how you save time, reduce costs, improve quality or generate revenue.
Build visibility inside your workplace and online.
And yes, make sure your boss likes you.
Competence matters.
Relationships still matter too!
3. Start something on the side
Use AI to start a small business.
Solve one painful problem.
Charge someone for the solution.
You do not need a unicorn.
You need proof that you can create income without waiting for an employerâs permission.
Don't wait for universal basic income.
Anything "free" will always come with a catch.
4. Save and invest aggressively
Optionality is expensive.
Savings buy time.
Investments buy leverage.
Debt and lifestyle inflation buy anxiety.
Choose carefully.
Especially if you have kids.
5. Become a Translator
This may become one of the most valuable professional skills of the next decade.
The Translator understands enough about technology, business, products and operations to connect them.
They can speak to executives.
Work with technical teams.
Understand customers.
Redesign processes.
And orchestrate AI agents to produce real outcomes.
They do not merely âuse AI.â
They know what AI should be used for.
That distinction will matter.
A lot.
The future is not something to fear.
But it is something to prepare for.
Times of disruption create extraordinary opportunities for people positioned correctly.
Get your hands dirty.
Use AI and automation to solve your own problems.
Fix small inefficiencies at work.
Create visible results.
Because the people who will remain valuable are the ones who can repeatedly identify problems and use new tools to solve them; not the ones who memorised the most information.
That is how you become difficult to replace.
I come in peace.
John
