Stop Being Nice. Start Getting Decisions.
Sometimes, you get advice on soft skills that are quite…
Useless:
“Communicate better.”
“Be empathetic.”
“Have emotional intelligence.”
Sure.
And while you’re at it, hydrate and breathe.
Soft skills only matter if they get RESULTS.
Here are 3 soft skill tricks that actually do just that. These are tactical, not theoretical.
🧠 1. Silent Friction Framing
The setup: A stakeholder asks for a “quick” feature mid-sprint.
Instead of resisting, say:
“That’s a solid idea. If we shift focus to that now, Feature X will miss the go-live date you prioritized last week. Want me to deprioritize that and update the timeline?”
They usually backpedal.
🎯 Why it works: You protect the roadmap while sounding collaborative. You’re not saying no. You’re making them choose their tradeoff.

👀 2. Mirrored Curiosity
The setup: You pitch a change. Someone silently resists.
Ask:
“You seem hesitant. Can you walk me through what’s giving you pause?”
Then go silent. You’ve asked a POLITE questions and you have given them the floor. Most people get uncomfortable with silence.
So, they’ll fill the gap.
🧩 Why it works: You surface the real blocker fast without a fight.
It’s about tactical listening.

🚪3. Exit Framing
The setup: The meeting is spiraling with no decision.
Say:
“We’ve got 10 mins. Sounds like two options: X or Y. If we leave undecided, we risk delaying Z. Can we vote now or assign someone by EOD?”
⏳ Why it works: You create urgency and make decision-making the responsible move.

💥 Soft skills aren’t just about being nice, but are also micro-moves that control momentum.
Use one this week.
Watch how quickly you start running the room.
